Breeding Program

SunOpta enhanced our existing soybean varietal selection programs to include our own in-house proprietary soybean breeding program.

This new program will meet the demand of growers and customers for new high yielding conventional varieties that can meet the performance of genetically modified varieties.

Over 90 percent of North America soybean acreage is GMO, which  has increased the need for new varieties of Non-GMO soybeans. Cross-pollinations of unique soybean cultivars will be made at this greenhouse to benefit all SunOpta soybean growing regions.
  • Our greenhouse was constructed in Moorhead, MN in April 2010

  • Pollinations or mating, of distinct soybean cultivars will be made at this greenhouse to benefit all SunOpta soybean growing regions

  • Approximately 7 to 10 years are needed to develop new varieties

SunOpta accessed soybean lines from various universities and the USDA Germplasm Resources Information Network. Soybeans selections were based on traits such as yield, protein, disease resistance, insect resistance and seed quality.

SunOpta has expanded to winter nurseries in teh Southern Hemisphere to continue the process throughout the Minnesota winter months.

SunOpta is excited to partner with growers, customers, researchers and collaborators to enhance the food grade soybean market for many years to come.
